It's hard to be the Bard
Maybe it was because we saw the show so early in the tour (day 2) or maybe it's because we are musical theatre people. Probably both! My wife and I agreed that SOMETHING ROTTEN (touring) was so full of infectious energy it was nearly impossible not to get swept away by this funny, clever and well produced show.
If you are a Shakespeare fan hold on to your iambic pentameter as "Rotten" lovingly lampoons the Bard for all he's worth. For anyone who is a fan of musical theatre you will be bombarded with a seemingly endless barrage of references that will have you YouTube-ing the soundtrack when you get home to make sure you didn't miss any.
The show we saw had a few minor technical issues, a brief audio feedback and a few awkward spotlight movements, but they were not nearly enough to tarnish the show and I will chock them up to the newness of the tour. The dancing was amazing! The large production numbers paid homage to, and/or poked fun at, the spectical of a bygone Broadway.
